Frequently asked questions

We use Cloudflare's image segmentation model to detect the foreground subject (usually people, pets, or products). The subject stays in focus; everything behind it gets blurred.
It works best when there is a clear subject in the foreground. Landscapes without a focal point may come out entirely sharp (the model finds no foreground) or entirely blurred. Use it on portraits, product shots, and photos with a clear subject in front of a busier background.
Light (30) gives a subtle separation, similar to a wide-aperture lens. Medium (60) is the classic portrait-mode look. Heavy (100) goes more abstract and works for editorial or hero images.
Edges follow the segmentation model. Crisp outlines (a person against a clear background, a clean product silhouette) come out sharp. Fine details like loose hair, fur, or mesh can produce a slightly soft halo (usually invisible on a blurred background but worth checking on the result).
